Now is the time to start getting all fired up about getting your vegetable seeds ordered, containers cleaned, sterilised and ready to receive the new organic compost. At Green Ghost Towers, we have been experimenting with a new idea of starting seeds – the jiffy pad - small discs of peat or coconut coir that swell in size when wetted. The trials have been to see which is the best medium to grow seeds. Well the jury is out on that as we will run the trials again this year, yet now the peat is just piping the coir to the post. Both types are available from nursery outlets or via the internet. Now to the top ten vegetables to grow in a container, please remember these are just the start of a greater selection of varieties being developed for the container market.
1. Lettuce – cut and come again
2. Spring onions – White Lisbon
3. Rocket – any
4. Tomato – Tumbling Tom (others available soon)
5. Ruby Chard
6. Cucumber – Burpless Tasty
7. Pepper – Apache
8. Runner bean – Hestia
9. Courgette – Ambassador And finally the versatile potato
10. – King Edward
By growing these in containers in any space you have available where there is sunlight, water and air you will reduce your food miles, relish the fresh produce and have a very relaxing hobby. Why not get the whole family involved and encourage your children, partners and friends to get growing.
Container fruit next time – until then – good growing and eating
